Nurse Aide I (Continuing Education)

Short Term

Students learn the basic nursing skills required to care for patients in a variety of health care settings. Through classroom instruction, laboratory work, and clinical rotations, students prepare take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) Examination for listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry (CNAI).

The required book聽will be provided at the first class.

Prerequisites

Students must be 16 and a half years of age on or prior to the first day of class.

One of the following:

  • High School diploma/HS Equivalency certificate (Official transcripts of Home School organizations must be accompanied by a copy of the verification of state authority to operate), OR
  • Proof of successful completion of EFL073, or DRE097, OR
  • A transcript documenting successful completion of a college-level English (ENG 111 or higher) course (unofficial transcripts are accepted)

Students must provide proof of the following:

  • A copy of your MMR (mumps, measles, rubella) 2 doses or positive titer
  • A copy of your varicella series (2 doses or positive titer)
  • A copy of your Tdap (Tetanus/ diphtheria), 1 dose and booster every 10 years 
  • A copy of your completed Hepatitis B vaccination series. A waiver will be provided at orientation if needed. 
  • A copy of a negative 2-step TB skin test OR blood test results (QuantiFERON Gold) OR negative chest x-ray within the last two ( 2) years if you had a positive PPD (valid through the end of the course). A 2-step TB test is required, if a blood test is not done. The two-step TB process requires that both tests must be completed within 30 days
    • Visit 1: Place the first PPD
    • Visit 2: 48-72 hours later, the PPD is read
    • Visit 3: 1-3 weeks after Visit 1, placement of 2nd PPD
    • Visit 4: 48-72 hours later, the PPD is read
  • Proof of full Covid-19 immunization
  • Annual Influenza vaccine (current- October - March)
  • Proof of Personal Health Insurance
  • A copy of AHA BLS training that is active through the end of the course (麻豆精品在线播放 offers this course)

The student, at their expense, will also be required to undergo a criminal background check and drug screen through the school's vendor, prior to the beginning of the clinical portion of the training. Certain findings on the criminal background check or drug screen may prohibit students from completing the program.

Financial Aid
  • Durham County residents or Durham Public Schools high school graduates can apply for ConnectFund grants that pay for course tuition. The application deadline is 10 days prior to the class start date.

Registration for Spring 2025 courses is now closed. Courses starting on May 1, 2025 or later will open for registration on March 31, 2025. Registration forms or documents submitted before March 31, 2025 will not be processed. To register for courses, please email nurseaide@durhamtech.edu.

NAS-3240A Nurse Aide I

This course is designed to prepare individuals to provide personal care and perform basic nursing skills for the elderly and other adults. Emphasis is on the aging process including mental, social, and physical needs of the elderly, patients' rights, nutrition management, elimination procedures, safe environment, restorative services, personal and special care procedures activities, human body structure and function, related common disease/disorders, communication and documentation, death and dying, and roles of nurse aides and/or health team members. The course includes class, skills lab, and clinical learning experiences. Upon successful completion, students are eligible to take the NC Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation for listing on the NA I Registry. Clinicals will be held at healthcare facilities in Durham or Orange counties. The prerequisites for this course are ONE of the following: HS diploma/Equivalency, OR successful completion of ENG002 or EFL073, OR unofficial college transcript showing successful completion of college level English (ENG 111 or higher). NAS-3240B Nurse Aide I Hospital-Based

This version of the non-credit, state-approved Nurse Aide I course is targeted toward students who want to work in a hospital setting. The course is designed to prepare graduates to work under the supervision of licensed health care professionals and perform nursing care and services for persons of all ages. This course includes basic nursing skills required to provide safe, competent personal care for individuals. Emphasis is on person-centered care, the aging process, communication, safety/emergencies, infection prevention, legal and ethical issues, measurements, elimination, nutrition, basic restorative care/rehabilitation, dementia, mental health, and end-of-life care. Coursework consists of lecture, skills lab, and clinical experience at an area hospital. Upon successful completion, students are eligible to take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) Examination for listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry (CNAI). Prerequisites: One of the following: High School diploma/Equivalent, ENG002, EFL074, unofficial college transcript. Additional requirements: Students in this course must be at least 18 years old, will need to complete a criminal background check and a drug screen, provide proof of immunization for COVID-19, MMR, Varicella, Tetanus, Influenza and TB, be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) and have health insurance PRIOR to the first day of class.
