Using Rubrics in Canvas Easily and Effectively

Submitted by Maureen Walters on

If you're looking to refine your grading process and provide feedback to your students, rubrics in Canvas are one possible tool to consider. Whether you're new to rubrics or just need a refresher, this will help to guide you through some of the questions that can come with using Rubrics in Canvas.

If you are not familiar with rubrics, please take some time to watch the recent presentation from Alicia Johnson 鈥鈥 put out by ODL  (Note: You may need to login with 麻豆精品在线播放 credentials to view the presentation). As Dr. Johnson points out, rubrics are scoring guides that outline the criteria for grading various assignments and helping students to examine their peers鈥 work in addition to their own. There are many ways to approach putting them together, and Dr. Johnson recommends using a backwards design to examine what the desired results are, the acceptable evidence to show these results, and then how learning activity that you have chosen will do this.

NC State also has provided good information about getting started with creating rubrics and the steps to take into account along the way with analyzing, deciding on the style of rubric, designing, and building rubrics. They have also provided templates and links to examples to help get started if you are new to using rubrics ().

 Rubrics can offer several benefits:

  • Clarity: Students understand what is expected of them
  • Consistency: Ensures uniform grading for students in a class or across several sections
  • Efficiency: Saves time by standardizing the evaluation process

There are many different approaches to rubrics, but once you have a sense of the direction you want to go in, you are ready to add your rubric into Canvas.

How to Add a Rubric in a Canvas Course

Adding a rubric in Canvas is a straightforward process that enhances the clarity and consistency of grading. Rubrics are great tools for communicating expectations and providing structured feedback to students. Here鈥檚 a brief guide on how to add a rubric to your course:

  1. Navigate to Rubrics: In your course navigation pane on the left side of the course, click on the Rubrics link.
  2. Create a New Rubric: Click the + Add Rubric button to start creating a new rubric on the Rubrics page. Please note that the page will be completely empty except for this button the first time you create a rubric.
  3. Title: Enter a title for your rubric. Canvas will default to 鈥淪ome Rubric.鈥 Give your rubric a name that will make it easy to remember what it covers so that you can find it easier.
  4. Criteria: Add criteria by clicking the "Edit" icon next to the default criterion. Provide a description and, if needed, an extended description for clarity. You can also hit the 鈥+Criterion鈥 link at the bottom of the rubric to add further criterion.
  5. Enable Ranges (Optional): If you prefer to use point ranges instead of fixed values, check the "Range" box. This allows you to assign ratings using a range of point values. Canvas will default to individual point values, so range will allow you to choose for the ratings to be between certain point values (e.g. 7-10).
  6. Add More Ratings: Add more ratings to the rubric by clicking the + button to include additional ratings for each criterion. Edit the rating details in the "Edit Rating" window that will open up. If you need to adjust a rating, you can do so by hitting the pencil icon in the upper righthand corner of the rating. Clicking the trashcan will delete a rating. Keep in mind that you will not be able to delete two of your ratings because of the requirements of a rubric in Canvas.

  1. Adjust Total Points: Modify the total point value for each criterion as needed. The default is set to 5 points, but you can adjust this to fit your grading scale.
  2. Save and Use: Once your rubric is complete, click the "Update Rubric" button to save your changes. You can now associate this rubric with assignments, graded discussions, or quizzes.
